Asbestos
There are two types of asbestos - non-friable and friable. The friable form is found in pipe insulation and is very hazardous to human health because of its airborne qualities. Non-friable asbestos products are siding, flooring and roofing products. These products aren't as hazardous due to the containment properties of the asbestos, but they still need to be handled with caution to prevent snapping.
The State of Vermont standards regulate any amount of asbestos waste exceeding ten (10) cubic yards from a single source and must be disposed of in a disposal facility certified to receive asbestos waste only.
The District does not accept any asbestos waste. With prior notification, special arrangements can be made to accept limited amounts of asbestos waste during our household hazardous waste collections. For removal or disposal, look in the yellow pages under "Asbestos abatement and removal," or try these companies:
- Catamount Environmental, Wilmington, VT (802) 464-2754.
- Green Mountain Environmental Services, Richmond, VT 1-800-220-5013.
- WSI Landfill, Moretown, VT (802) 244-8888. The WSI facility requires material to be damp, double-bagged in 6 mil plastic bags or duct-taped sheet plastic, with at least 24-hour notice, only on Tuesdays, at $125 per ton with a $50 minimum, and it must be labeled with the following information:
- who removed the asbestos,
- who hauled it,
- who owns the building it was removed from.
